Summary of scientific contributions
Behaviour: Observations on reproductive behaviour showed that, depending on the species, either only males were attracted to females or both males and females were attracted to one another in response to sex pheromones. Attraction gradually declined with age. Mated females became less attractive although the response of the males was not affected. Virgins lived longer as compared to non-virgin individuals. Matings and number of sperms transferred declined with age. Males isolated showed a sharp decline in the number of matings and the total number of sperms transferred. Predation was influenced by temperature and activity of the prey; the more active were predated less. Predators were not attracted to their prey and the abundance of prey may or may not influence predation.
Biology: A stage-wise division and differentiation of the primordial cells (nuclei) and the differentiation of the extra-gonadal cells that will form the vulva and the accessory reproductive structures of the males have been detailed. A study of the early cleavage patterns in some predatory dorylaim species has shown that after the third division three basic patterns emerged. The similarities and differences in the early cleavage patterns did not indicate any phylogenetic relationship within Dorylaimoidea.
Taxonomy: The taxonomic contributions include the descriptions of 42 new species and four new genera. By SEM several new findings (structures) have been reported for the first time (post-amphidial papillae in Thalassogenus sp.; papillae around spinneret in some soil nematodes), and additional information provided for many species.
